Start of construction of the new fire training center

Crews have officially begun work on the brand new state-of-the-art fire training station on Tinker Drive. The fire department, mayor, construction crews and local leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, May 19.

“We didn’t mention when we said we were going to act quickly,” said fire chief Shane Edwards. “Two weeks ago our firefighters suffered their last fire in the old building, and now we have cleared the ground as we prepare for the next step in securing our brand new training facility.”

Warren Associates is leading the construction of the $3.2 million facility. $2.8 million of the cost came from the voter-approved Local Options Special Sales Tax (SPLOST) and the rest was set aside from the county’s general fund. This new facility was carefully chosen and designed after the chief, county superintendent and firefighters traveled to various centers across the country to ensure Macon-Bibb County firefighters were getting exactly what they needed. need.

“Having this new center will help us retain our class one title,” Mayor Lester Miller said. “But it will also train our sheriff’s office and surrounding counties in our state. We are so excited to see how this center will change our community for the better.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
