Probility Ann Arbor Marathon returns Sunday with mental health spotlight

ANN ARBOR – The tenth Ann Arbor Probility Marathon takes place Sunday in downtown Ann Arbor.

The race, which usually takes place in March, has been postponed to 2020 and 2021 due to health concerns related to COVID-19.

Each year, the race supports several local charities, and this year the event organizer EPIC Races has partnered with the Rotary Club in what they call a charity takeover.

“We devote all of our fundraising efforts to organizations that help and support mental health and / or issues associated with mental health, and play an active role in reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness,” said race director Eva Solomon in a statement. “We currently support 20 local charities and are all working together to stay true to our slogan ‘E-Race the Stigma’.

“We started this partnership with Epic Races in late 2019, when mental health issues were a huge issue,” Collyer Smith, District Mental Health Coordinator for the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor, said in a statement. “At that point, of course, we didn’t know what was going to happen. The coronavirus pandemic and the continued spread of illegal fentanyl have taken their toll among drug addicts. Drug overdoses hit a record 93,000 last year, followed by a skyrocketing increase in the number of deaths. It is important to raise awareness and educate, and we hope to do what we can through this event. “

The race consists of a full marathon, a half marathon and both a 10k and a 5k. The start and finish line is located on South 5th Street between Madison and Hill. All races start at 8 a.m.
