Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends PCV15 for children under 19

The 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15) can be used in children less than 19 years of age, according to recommendations issued by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and published in the September 16 issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Noting that PCV15 was cleared for use in adults ages 18 and older in 2021, Miwako Kobayashi, MD, Ph.D., of the CDC in Atlanta, and colleagues discuss the use of PCV15 for children .

The authors note that based on studies comparing antibody responses to PCV15 with those to PCV13, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the expanded use of PCV15 on June 17, 2022, to include people aged 6 and over. weeks to 17 years old. In addition to the PCV13 serotypes, PCV15 contains the 22F and 33F serotypes conjugated to CRM197. On June 22, 2022, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended PCV15 as an option for pneumococcal conjugate vaccination for individuals under the age of 19 at the currently recommended PCV13 dosage and schedules. No change was noted in the risk-based recommendations on the use of PPSV23 for people aged 2 to 18 years with certain underlying medical conditions that increase the risk of pneumococcal disease.

“PCV15 as an option for pneumococcal conjugate vaccination is expected to reduce the incidence of pneumococcal disease in children because it induces immunity against other pathogenic serotypes,” the authors write.
